Xometry Staff can view MBD/PMI in STEP AP242, SLDPRT, or CATPart file formats and configure your parts according to this information. However, we need you to inform us when your files have MBD/PMI. Ideally, you should also provide us with 3D PDFs to accompany your MBD files to assist with quoting and manufacturing.
What is MBD or PMI?
Instead of a typical 2D manufacturing drawing, Model-Based Definition (MBD) defines manufacturing information for a part in a 3D model. This manufacturing information contains Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI) metadata.
Instructions for uploading MBD/PMI files
Xometry Staff can view and configure parts with MBD/PMI. Below are instructions for how to best utilize Xometry's platform:
- Upload your MBD/PMI file in a STEP AP242, SLDPRT, or CATPart file type to Xometry's Instant Quoting Engine.
- Attach a 3D PDF or technical drawing to each part line item by selecting
Upload Drawings
. - Configure your quote*:
- *Note: Xometry's platform does not automatically configure part line items with MBD.
- If you can configure yourself, use the
Edit Configuration
feature on each line item to match your part requirements with the drop-down selections. - If you need assistance setting up the quote, upload your file(s) and Contact Us or your sales representative so a team member can finalize the quote. You can also use our bulk upload tool (
Start Your Large Order
from your Dashboard) for larger CAD packages.
How do I export a 3D PDF?
Here are some CAD platform instructions for exporting a 3D PDF.
Ensure that your 3D PDF contains the following PMI:
- Material and Finishing Requirements
- Thread Callouts
- Dimensions and Tolerances
- Surface Roughness Requirements
- Quality Control Requirements
- Manufacturing Notes
Below is an example of a 3D PDF with appropriate technical information:
What happens if there is a discrepancy between MBD and the ordered part?
It is important that Xometry is notified of parts with MBD/PMI to ensure the quote configuration matches the requirements embedded in the file to prevent delays in orders or changes in pricing and lead time. If there is a discrepancy, a staff member will place the order ON HOLD and ask for clarification.
If there is a problem with the quality of your received part, we are here to help make it right. You can review Xometry's return policy and submit requests here.
