You can select DFARS Material Certifications under many of Xometry’s manufacturing options. This should be explicitly requested if your product needs to apply to DFARS 252.225-7008 and DFARS 252.225-7009. Like all material certifications, DFARS Material Certs need to be requested during quoting to guarantee compliance.
This differs from a Domestic Material Cert, which documents that the foundry that made the material/alloy is on domestic United States soil. A DFARS Certification applies to specific metals and alloys with regulated alloying element limits and is done with a compliant melting process made in DFARS-qualified countries.

Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) is specifically for Department of Defense (DoD) projects. It goes beyond alloys and spans a series of regulations outlined by the DoD. If the DoD requires DFARS for your project, a DFARS-compliant material is required. Requesting the certification gives an auditable documentation trail to your project, including a paper copy with your shipment and digital copies associated with your order files.
What metals are covered with DFARS?

What metals are exempt from DFARS?
The following metals are not considered "specialty metals" under DFARS and are therefore exempt from its restrictions*:
- Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys
- Aluminum 5052
- Aluminum 6061, 7075, etc.
- Carbon Steel
- Steel 1008, 1018, and other 1000-series
- Steel A36
- Steel A572
- Copper and Copper Alloys
- Copper 101, 110, etc
- Brass and Bronze Alloys
- Lead and Lead Alloys
- Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys
- Nickel Alloys
- Nickel 200, 201 (commercially pure)
- Zinc and Zinc Alloys
- Commercially Available Off-the-Shelf (COTS) Items
- Metals with Nonavailability Determinations
*Rules typically apply for general-purpose-grade materials. Specialty alloy compositions may require review or DFARS compliance.
Are plastics exempt from DFARS?
Yes. Plastics, polymers, composites, ceramics, stone, glass, elastomers, rubber, wood, paper, and other organically-derived materials are exempt from DFARS.
What happens if a DFARS Material Cert is requested for exempt materials?
A standard material certification will be provided if a DFARS Material Certification is requested and the material is exempt. An Xometry team member will reach out if a material certification is unavailable.
