Selecting Edit Configuration
on your Xometry quote will bring you to a customization menu where you can update the process, material, features, finishes, tolerances, and more. One of these options is Part Marking. Part Marking updates dynamically based on the process and materials you select; below is a brief overview of each option.
Part Marking Options Defined
- Silkscreen is a cosmetic marking method where a screen stencil is created with the required markings. That screen is then placed on a flat plane of a part, and ink is applied over the screen with an even sweeping pressure (e.g., via a squeegee). The result is clear, crisp text or logos in a specified color—typically white or black. Building the screen and frame has a fixed setup, which is then amortized over quantity. Silkscreen is best for fine details, logos, and readable markings on powder coat surfaces.
- An Ink Stamp is typically used for non-cosmetic part numbering or identification. It involves producing a custom stamp, dipping it in ink, and pressing it onto the given component. Inks can come in various colors but are typically a high-contrasting black or white.
- Bag and Tag is a common method of protecting and providing identification of parts through individual packaging. Parts are placed in a rectangular bag with a printed label of part information. This does not permanently mark the part but does help with sorting, inventory, and identification.
- Engraving is an excellent option for marking CNC components as it can be incorporated during the machining process using an engraving tool. Engraved parts do not have color but show contrast by cutting a shallow groove in the desired text or font. Avoid serif fonts, as machine tools will need a small radius for machine engraving.
- Laser Mark is an excellent option for making high-contrast text and non-text details on the planar face of a part. Laser marking uses a laser to ablate the surface of a part material. Laser marking does not have a specific color, but will show as a permanent marking with a texture or visual change. Laser marking is great for metal and some plastics. Anodized parts with laser marking will show lighter, high-contrast markings.
